Swieqi Overseas Rugby: Season Review 2015 / 2016

Mens Cisk League XV Winners 2015 / 2016

A second league title and the senior Men’s team being crowned champions of Malta for the second time in 3 years ended a highly successful season for Overseas Rugby. The Men’s side won 3 of the 4 trophies available and the Women’s and Junior sections saw excellent growth and development.

Men’s Rugby

The Men’s season started well in the traditional season opener, the Ray Elliot cup, against last season’s champions Stompers. Overseas had won this last year and never looked in danger of giving up the trophy as a controlled performance saw them run out 28-3 winners.

The Medbank Cup group stages saw Overseas put together a remarkable set of results, conceding only 5 points in 4 matches and finsihing as first seeds. A comfortable win over Kavalierri saw them play last year’s champions Stompers in the final. On a hot late spring day, the game ebbed and flowed for 70 minutes, despite numerous Overseas injuried. Despite thinking they’d won the match with a late a try, a penalty a couple of minutes from time mean’t Overseas had to settle for second place.

The league season was spread over 6 months, with numerous breaks for holidays, international matches, poor weather and even a Royal visit! Overseas won 7 out of their 8 matches to finish with the best defensive record in the league and set up a playoff with Stompers. In a display of controlled rugby in difficult conditions, built on strong carrying and excellent handling, they ran our 21-12 winners to finish the regular season on a high.

They weren’t done there though, as they ran out undefeated winners in the Gozo 7s tournament for the third year running, despite some tired bodies!

Three of our players achieved international honours with the Malta national team and represented the club with distinction: Clayton Cassar, Vince Stivala and club captain Anthony Harvey.

Overseas is proud to have a Maltese core with a traditional cross section of nationalities represented and we were pleased this continued this year. Among the countries represented were the UK, France, the Netherlands, Mexico, Uruguay, Serbia and Portugal.

Women’s Rugby

The women’s section saw exceptional growth with the squad finishing the season stronger than ever.

Kicking-off the season with harsh pre-season training, followed by a tour in Sheffield, England served as a trial to boost their performance.

Eager for more, the ladies kept following rigorous training, growing tougher with each tackle and even though they got knocked down a few times they stood up as one. Fought back with great enthusiasm, mind blowing hand-offs, stunning off loads and phenomenal teamwork. Through their constant hard work and organized activities, an amateur team has grown into an outstanding squad that successfully achieved 2nd place and having 5 members competing for the coming national selection.

Junior/Youth Rugby

The rugby academy was set up in the summer and has enjoyed remarkable growth under the direction of Chris Cachia and Brian Pratt. There are now Under 10s, Under 12s and Under 14s sides being run with training midweek and on the weekends. They represented the club well on tour to Sardinia and the academy will continue to go from strength to strength.

Overall, we had an excellent season and look forward to hopefully an equally successful next season in what will be our 70th anniversary year.
