Overseas Rugby Club honoured by a visit from 3 Rugby greats

At our recent game on the 16th October we were honoured to welcome three very special guests. These were

  • John Evans – our first team captain in the 1960’s
  • Brian Jackson – also our first team captain, 1964 – 68
  • Derek Morgan – England captain and coach, international selector and former President of the English Rugby Union. Widely acknowledged as one of the world’s greatest players, coaches and administrators.

In the late 1960’s, John and Derek organised an annual Easter game between Overseas and a John Evans XV, led by Derek and including many famous players from that era. They completed three tours of Malta and this was the first time Derek had returned since then.

They watched our game against Kavallieri and spoke warmly and positively about both teams. They also spent time chatting with other spectators, sharing stories and experiences.

In front of a packed clubhouse at Marsa, Steve Busuttil, President of the MRFU, presented Derek with a plaque to commemorate his visit. Mdina glass souvenirs were also given to each of our guests on behalf of Overseas. A special presentation was also made by our guests to our club mascot, Ruby Harvey, although Ruby was a little reluctant at first !

There were many memories to share, friendships to renew and lots of laughter and joy. It was clearly an emotional event, which indicates the impact that our club has had on those who have played a part here.

We were privileged to share their company, they really are three wonderful people who have a very proud association with our club.

John, Brian, Derek – thank you from everyone at Overseas.

It is great to see them all looking so well. I’m sorry I was unable to be there, but best wishes to all at the Club.
