MRFU National Women’s in the European Rugby 7’s Qualifiers

The MRFU National Women’s 7s team competed in the European 7s Division B Qualifiers which was held on the 20th and 21st June in Zagreb, Croatia. Our very own team captain Sairita Cassar, Tessabelle Sultana and Wendy Pace were part of the national selection. Tessabelle Sultana was also chosen to be the National Team’s Vice Captain. The team was coached by Carmelo Lonogo, Kirby Attard was the team manger, and Noel Hili was the physiotherapist.

This tournament was part of the Olympic qualification process.

The 12 teams competing in the tournament where divided into 3 pools as follows:
Pool A: Denmark, Turkey, Luxemburg, Montenegro.
Pool B: Malta, Croatia, Bulgaria, Slovenia.
Pool C: Israel, Latvia, Serbia, Austria.

On the first day the Women’s 7s National team played 3 games.

First, Malta played against Bulgaria. Tessabelle Sultana scored 2 tries one of which was converted by the team captain Marion Azzopardi. This resulted in a 12-12 draw. In the next game, Malta played against Slovenia and won 25-0. Rodianne Bugeja scored 3 tries while Marion Azzopardi and Beverie Sultana scored 1 try each. In the last game for the day Malta faced Croatia and lost 5-15. The try in this game was completed by Beverie Sultana.
On the second day, our Women lost against Latvia 12-22. Beverie Sultana and Rodianne Bugeja completed 1 try each, one of which was converted by Azzopardi. Malta then won against Luxemburg with a total of 21-5, getting them in the Plate Final. During the last game, however Malta lost against Turkey with the total score of 7-10.

As a result, the Women’s 7s National Maltese team placed 6th.

    The Maltese girls earned the right to compete in the high-level tournament after winning promotion as runners-up of the Women’s Conference last year. The Czech Republic securedpromotion to the European Nations Trophy Division after defeating Malta 48-14 in Prague yesterday.
